Engraving depicting Marocco, also known as the "Dancing Horse," "Thinking Horse," or the "Politic Horse." Marocco lived in the late 16th century and was well known for clever acts like walking on two feet, playing dead, distinguishing between colors, and pulling specific members of his audience. He was also known to be able to count. At one point his owner, Bankes, was arrested and charged with sorcery and had to reveal that many tricks were accomplished with sublte hand gestures. Engraving is toned with some light spotting in margins. Probably taken from a book, pencil notation in lower margin.
